Association of Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers and Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls held a one-day Town Hall Meeting/Project Launch of "Promoting the Rights of Original Inhabitants of FCT".
In her address, the Executive Director, Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG), Mrs. Abiodun Essiet, said, one of the goals of the project is to educate women and the girl child on their rights and to ensure all stakeholders play their role to end all forms of sexual and Gender-based violence (especially among people with disability) in the FCT and Nigeria at large.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development says it will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to end Gender-based violence in the country. This was contained in a goodwill message by the Minister: Mrs. Pauline Tallen; duly represented by the Acting Director, Women Development in the Ministry.
She acknowledged Gender-based violence cuts across both gender, but more emphasis is made on women and girls because they are mostly at the receiving end.
The Executive Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Abdullahi Candido decried poor representation of women in politics and called for the empowerment of women and girls in society.
The Town Hall Meeting which coincided with the 16 Days of Activism, created an avenue to promote collaboration and awareness among stakeholders on the fight against Gender-based violence.
The event which was held at the National Center for Women Development had in attendance Political Office Holders, Traditional Rulers, and representatives of the Original Inhabitants of FCT.
