Today, Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG), held a one day Capacity Training for FCT Traditional Rulers tagged
" Strengthening Traditional Justice System of FCT Original Inhabitants to Combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence".
This is inline with the project we are currently implementing: "Promoting The Rights of Original Inhabitants of FCT” funded by MacArthur Foundation through Resource Centre for Civic Education (CHRICED).
Present were Traditional Rulers across two Area Councils: AMAC and Bwari; the Executive chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council: Hon. Abdullahi Adamu; Magistrate FCT Judiciary: Theresa N. Otu; Assistant Director, Community and Chieftaincy matters, FCTA: Dr. Asmau Adamu; S.A Tech, Area Council Services Secretariat FCTA: Muhammed Musa; and members of staff.
In his goodwill message, the Executive Chairman of AMAC commended the FCT OI project team for recognizing the importance of traditional institutions in emancipating the original inhabitants in FCT. He also stressed the need for Civil Society Organizations to speak truth to power concerning the statelessness of the FCT original inhabitants while also appealing to the Federal Government through the FCTA not to ignore the agitations of the OIs and take appropriate steps to fully integrate them into the society.
The Traditional Rulers were trained on SGBV, Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, Restorative Justice, and Circle of Conflict/Victim Offender Mediation. The training measures includes: Pre Test, Practical Discussion, Group work and a Post Test/Evaluation.
Alh. Ali Akawu, the District Head of Kawu, Bwari Area Council, on behalf of other Traditional Rulers lauded the initiative and promised they will utilize the knowledge gained during the Capacity Training, to combat sexual and gender-based violence in their respective sphere of influence.
There was also free medical check up for those present at the event.
