Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG), held an Indigenous Women Town Hall Meeting with the theme: "Deliberative Dialogue with Original Inhabitant Women in FCT; dentifying their struggles and celebrating their Resilience".
This is in commemoration of international women's day 2022. The Town Hall Meeting had in attendance, the Executive Chairman, AMAC: Hon. Abdullahi Adamu; Speaker, AMAC Legislative Council: RT. Hon. Isah Abubakar; Councilor Representing Ushafa Ward, Bwari Area Council: Hon. Maryamu Isa Barnabas; Assistant Director, Community & Chieftaincy Matters, FCTA: Dr. Asmau Musa Adama; the Director Legal Council: Mary Amodu; and Indigenous Women across the six area councils in FCT.
In his goodwill message, the chairman of AMAC urged the National Assembly to reconsider the Gender Equality Bills that didn't make it through and also urged women to occupy the National Assembly until their demands are met.
In the same vein, the Hon. Speaker, AMAC Legislative Council, lend his voice to the struggles being faced by women in the political space, especially the indigenous women and urged the Federal Government and FCTA not to push the original inhabitants to result to unconventional ways to get their rights.
Issues affecting FCT original inhabitant women in particular, and women in general were deliberated upon, and indigenous women present shared their personal struggles and how they have been able surmount those challenges.
An Award was presented to Hon. Maryamu Isa Barnabas, in recognition of her outstanding contributions and resilience as an indigenous woman in leadership and development.
