The OI project team of Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG), organized a one day sensitization seminar
on sexual and gender-based violence in G.S.S Rubochi, Kuje area council; and also raised actors and anti-GBV ambassadors.
In her brief introduction to the students, the Executive Director of AEIG, Mrs. Abiodun Essiet, intimated them on our purpose for coming, while urging them to be attentive and be actively involved. She also challenged them to speak up whenever they experience any form of gender-based violence and asked the students to be committed to their academics, which should be their priority right now, and advised those who have experienced abuse to come out of their shells as it is never the victim's fault.
The students were sensitized on the various forms, and the myths and truth of SGBV, and to speak up and report whenever they experience or witness SGBV in the school, at home or in their communities. They were also taken through the provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act which is in effect in Abuja and some states of the federation.
The interactive seminar had over 200 students (who are mostly original inhabitants) in attendance. They were shown a documentary on SGBV to further charge them on the urgency for everyone to play their part to curtail the menace.
Five students were selected and endorsed as anti-GBV ambassadors.
