TOWN HALL MEETING IN COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls held a Town Hall Meeting tagged "The Role of Indigenous Women

in Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge". This is in commemoration of United Nations International Day of World's Indigenous peoples marked on the 9th of August, every year.

The Meeting brought together indigenous women and traditional rulers across the 17 chiefdoms in FCT; indigenous organizations; representatives of the 6 area council administration and the Federal Capital Territory Administration to discuss on reviving the culture and protecting the Identity of the Indigenous people of FCT.

Political marginalization, access to efficient health care service, demolition, displacement, and resettlement of FCT OI, little or no government presence in OI communities in terms of infrastructure, were some other issues raised during the meeting.

A major highlight of the event was a cultural display by the OWA Cultural Group from Gwandara ethnic group of Abuja.
