SENSITIZATION SEMINAR ON SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN G.S.S GWAGWALADA

Earlier today, the OI project team of Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG),

organized a one day sensitization seminar on sexual and gender-based violence in G.S.S Gwagwalada, Gwagwalada area council; and also raised actors and anti-GBV ambassadors.

Representing the principal, the vice principal admin: Mr. Anze Vincent, led the management staff who welcomed the team. In a brief introduction to the students, he intimated them on our purpose for coming, while urging them to be attentive and be actively involved. He also challenged them to speak up whenever they experience any form of gender-based violence.

Miss Josephine Emeghoghena, the Program Officer, who represented the Executive Director, tasked the students to be committed to their academics, which should be their priority right now, and advised those who have experienced abuse to come out of their shells as it is never the victim's fault.

The very interactive seminar had over 150 students (who are mostly original inhabitants) and they all partook in a pre-test to ascertain their level of understanding on SGBV; and a post-test at the end of the seminar to measure the level of impact. They were also shown a documentary on SGBV to further charge them on the urgency for everyone to play their part to curtail the menace.

The students were sensitized on the various forms, and the myths and truth of SGBV, and to speak up and report whenever they experience or witness SGBV in the school, at home or in their communities.

Five students were selected and endorsed as anti-GBV ambassadors. Miss Josephine Emeghoghena challenged them to see themselves as change agents wherever they may find themselves, and play their part in the fight against SGBV.
